Nothing Really New

The latest headline about Actos (generic name, pioglitazone) is that the Japanese manufacturer, Takeda, under orders from the FDA, has begun a long-term study of nearly 200,000 people in California to determine the cancer risk of Actos.

The interesting thing is that this risk was already observed in lab animals. Furthermore, bladder cancer has been reported often enough in people that the new study is reactive rather than proactive regarding this risk. Indeed, the incidence of cancer rises with increasing dosage and duration of use beyond the median (24 months). This is a drug whose annual sales are 4.5 billion dollars. What do you think the FDA will do? The first comment by the FDA is probably predictive. The agency already released a statement that the increased incidence of bladder cancer at 24 months is statistically insignificant. Don’t you feel better now?

Basics of Actos

This is quoted from Wikipedia on Actos:

Pioglitazone is a prescription drug of the class thiazolidinedione (TZD) with hypoglycemic (antihyperglycemic, antidiabetic) action. Pioglitazone is marketed as trademarks Actos in the USA and UK, Glustin in Europe,”Glizone” and “Pioz” in India by Zydus CND and USV respectively and Zactos in Mexico by Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Actos was the tenth-best selling drug in the U.S. in 2008, with sales exceeding $2.4 billion. [Note that this figure is about half of the latest annual report.]

Listed Side Effects

A press release by GlaxoSmithKline in February 2007 noted that there is a greater incidence of fractures of the upper arms, hands and feet in female diabetics given rosiglitazone compared with those given metformin or glyburide. The information was based on data from the ADOPT trial. Following release of this statement, Takeda also admitted that pioglitazone has similar implications for female patients.

The risk of hypoglycemia is low in the absence of other drugs that lower blood glucose.

Pioglitazone can cause fluid retention and peripheral edema. As a result, it may precipitate congestive heart failure (which worsens with fluid overload in those at risk). It may cause anemia. Mild weight gain is common due to increase in subcutaneous adipose tissue. In studies, patients on pioglitazone had an increased proportion of upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, headache, myalgia and tooth problems.

On July 30, 2007 an Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration concluded that the use of rosiglitazone for the treatment of type 2 diabetes was associated with a greater risk of “myocardial ischemic events” when compared to placebo, but when compared to other diabetes drugs, there was no increased risk. Pioglitazone is currently being reviewed. A meta-analysis released subsequently showed that pioglitazone reduced the number of ischemic cardiac events rather than increase the risk, but increases CHF. The PERISCOPE study compared pioglitazone with glimepiride in diabetics; atherosclerotic plaque volume was measured and followed over time. Glimepiride therapy had highly significant progression of plaque volume over time of 0.73 percent. In comparison, pioglitazone had a -0.16 percent regression in plaque volume. This is the first study to show that diabetic therapy slowed progression of atherosclerosis. Therapy with pioglitazone raised HDL, and lowered triglyceride and hsCRP; these are all beneficial effects on risk factors for coronary artery disease, however to date, no oral anti-diabetic drug has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. Chronic administration of the drug has led to occasional instances of cholestatic hepatitis, reversible upon drug discontinuation.

Preliminary data from a 10-year epidemiological study from Takeda Pharmaceutical Company indicated a possible link between pioglitazone and bladder cancer. The findings prompted the FDA to order safety reviews for the drug in September 2010.

Not So Scary Alternatives

Diabetes is a spectrum disorder. Depending on where you are along the spectrum, from incipient or pre-diabetes to full-blown pancreatic failure, you have dietary and supplement alternatives that are much more effective and much better for your health than any drug. You have many, many options.

Amygdalin

Amygdalin is extracted from almond or apricot kernel cake by boiling in ethanol; on evaporation of the solution and the addition of diethyl ether, amygdalin is precipitated as white minute crystals. Liebig and Wöhler were already able to find three decomposition products of the newly discovered amygdalin: sugar, benzaldehyde, and prussic acid (hydrogen cyanide). Later research showed that sulfuric acid decomposes it into D-glucose, benzaldehyde, and prussic acid ; while hydrochloric acid gives mandelic acid, D-glucose, and ammonia.

Laetrile

Amygdalin is sometimes confused with laevomandelonitrile, also called laetrile for short; however, amygdalin and laetrile are different chemical compounds. Laetrile, which was patented in the United States, is a semi-synthetic molecule sharing part of the amygdalin structure, while the “laetrile” made in Mexico is usually amygdalin, the natural product obtained from crushed apricot pits, or neoamygdalin.

Though it is sometimes sold as “Vitamin B17″, it is not a vitamin. Amygdalin/laetrile was claimed to be a vitamin by chemist Ernst T. Krebs in the hope that if classified as a nutritional supplement it would escape the federal legislation regarding the marketing of drugs. He could also capitalise on the public fad for vitamins at that time.

I just finished reading the best book on prostate cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment I have ever read — and I’ve read several! The book is called “Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers.” You’ll get an idea of its content from the sub-title “No More Unnecessary Biopsies, Radical Treatment or Loss of Sexual Potency.”

The book’s value comes from the qualifications of the two authors. Mark Scholz, M.D. is a medical oncologist. His specialty for the last 15 years has been treating prostate cancer. He is the medical director of Prostate Oncology Specialists, Inc. and the Executive Director of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute. A very distinguished clinician and researcher. His co-author is Ralph Blum, a 20-year prostate cancer survivor who is now 78 (my age). They write alternating chapters and comment at the end of each other’s chapters. A very interesting and attention- keeping format. Both are good authors.

I learned more from this book about my options for dealing with my enlarged prostate (all us seniors have one) than from any other source. I also re-learned that the overtreatment of prostate cancer is a very real danger that all men should be aware of. Dr. Scholz also does a great job of informing you of what’s “coming soon” in the way of new and effective treatment options.

All men need to read this book — and take lots of notes — so they will be ready to evaluate the advice they get from their urologist or oncologist. Essential stuff! It’s available at:

Introduction To Cesium Therapy

Cesium therapy, also called cesium high pH therapy, for treating cancer was discovered in the 1970s. Scientific research that led to this discovery goes back to the 1930s. The key to this protocol is alkalizing the tumor environment with the use of cesium. Clinical research on humans shows cesium to be a critical ingredient that leads to shrinkage and disappearance of tumors by specifically targeting cancer cell metabolism.

The complete protocol requires additional natural components besides cesium. These include certain common vitamins and minerals. With adequate guidance and medical supervision, cesium therapy is an easy, cost-effective, and simple approach for self-administering at home.

The purpose of this article is to provide a scientist’s views of cesium high pH therapy for treating cancer, as a different perspective for helping you decide whether to use this protocol. However, the information here is not a how-to for using it on your own. There is no single protocol for everyone, since different cancers, cancer stages, and personal treatment histories vary widely from one person to the next. Your best strategy is to decide on whether you are going to use this protocol, then get treatment advice from a medical or research professional who has experience with it. I will have comments on how to do so later in this article.

History Of Cesium Therapy

History is a nice topic, although not especially important for including here. The history of the protocol is already well known and widely available on the internet. Key researchers have published their explanations and results on why it works and how well it works in clinical settings. As of this writing, a Google search returns 845,000 page hits on cesium therapy and 19,300 page hits on cesium high pH therapy. The vast majority of these pages just repeat each other, so you do not have to read very many of them to get a good historical perspective.

The first proponent of cesium high pH therapy was A. Keith Brewer, who discovered that cancer cells have a high affinity for cesium. Cancer cell membranes readily absorb cesium, which is the most alkaline of the metals. The consequence of taking in cesium, therefore, is to radically raise the pH (alkalinity) of the cancer cell to 8.0 or above, which leads to the death of the cancer cell within hours or days.

Raising the pH of cancer cells is crucial in light of the discovery by Otto Warburg in the 1930s that cancer cells thrive in acidic conditions. Warburg also pointed out the relationships among acidity, the metabolism of glucose, and the reduction of oxygen in cancer cells. All of these factors change in alkaline conditions, to the detriment of cancer cell metabolism.

Clinical Research

In a practical sense, any decision on whether to use a particular cancer therapy should depend on evidence for its effectiveness, including its safety. Since all medical research is flawed, you must decide on what to do for yourself based on incomplete or flawed evidence. The most common flaws of research on alternative cancer therapies are that studies are generally few and almost always small. Research on cesium therapy fits that mold. Nevertheless, the following summary of early research represents what we do know.

The earliest and most prolific medical professional to conduct research on cesium therapy was Dr. H.E. Sartori. His first study began in 1981 with 50 terminal cancer patients, 47 of whom had already exhausted all mainstream treatments before undergoing cesium therapy. In other words, their condition was considered to be hopeless.

Dr. Sartori’s basic protocol for most patients consisted of 2 to 3 grams of cesium chloride orally, 3 times per day, plus supplements and dietary changes.

The most remarkable immediate result of cesium therapy was that pain disappeared in all patients within 1 to 3 days. Conventional therapy often entails the use of morphine to treat pain in terminal cancer patients. In fact, morphine may be the only drug used on cancer patients after standard treatments have been exhausted, just to keep the patient comfortable until death.

Regarding longer term effects of cesium therapy, half of Sartori’s original 50 patients were still surviving 3 years later. Of those who did not survive, 13 had died within 2 weeks of the beginning of the study. It was just too late for cesium therapy to be of use to this group. Nevertheless, autopsies still revealed a reduction in tumor mass in all 13 patients. One other patient died from a tragic accident after being released from the hospital. An autopsy revealed that her hipbone had been consumed by cancer, leading to a fatal fall at home. At the time of death she had very small amounts of cancer still remaining.

Conventional therapy fails miserably when the initial tumor spreads to other sites. The failure rate is more than 95 percent. Cesium therapy rescued 25 of 50 cancer patients from certain death. Who knows how many would have lived had treatment with cesium begun before modern medicine gave up on them.

The flaws in this study are too numerous to include in this short article. Conventional cancer researchers can easily pick it apart. The study was not designed scientifically. At best, I would call it a series of case studies, not really an experiment. Case studies are the medical equivalent of testimonials with medical data. They have value in spite of not offering statistically significant results.

The bottom line is that Sartori treated 50 hopeless cancer patients and 25 of them lived well beyond what anyone in mainstream medicine expected. Subplots in this story entailed remarkable pain relief as well as individual case histories that defied possibility via conventional treatment.

Sartori’s work was preceded by studies with lab animals (mice). His clinical research represents the beginning of human studies with cesium therapy. And it was followed by further small human studies that all showed amazing results with cesium therapy.

Highest Cancer Cure Rate

That catchy phrase refers to the work of German cancer doctor, Hans Nieper. His success in treating cancer, which included cesium therapy, was so good that he may have had the greatest cure rate of all time. There is no way to substantiate this claim, of course, although it gives you a hint of how good Nieper’s results were viewed.

Nieper was also widely known for treating the rich and famous, mostly Hollywood actors and politicians. The names are irrelevant. However, the most telling comment about his success is a quote by Nieper himself about the FDA, as follows:

“You wouldn’t believe how many FDA officials or relatives or acquaintances of FDA officials come to see me as patients in Hanover. You wouldn’t believe this, or directors of the AMA, or ACA, or the presidents of orthodox cancer institutes. That’s the fact.”

The original source of this quote is either buried in a book or in an interview article, so I have not verified it. It shows up on several thousand web pages, including the quote page for the American Medical Association. This is weak evidence for validating the quote, so we are stuck with it as is.

Additional Components Of Cesium Therapy

Cesium causes a depletion of serum potassium, so potassium testing (every other week or so) and supplementation is crucial for preventing potassium deficiency. In addition, in most cases Sartori and Nieper included the following supplements with cesium: vitamin C (5 to 10 grams), vitamin A (100,000 to 300,000 IU), zinc (50 to 100 milligrams), selenium (200 to 600 micrograms), and even laetrile. Patients also received EDTA for chelation, DMSO, and magnesium salts and other minerals and vitamins for enhancing the treatment and increasing oxygenation and circulation.

As I mentioned before, there is no single protocol for everyone. The exact amount of cesium chloride and combination of supplements should be tailored to each cancer patient. All treatment can be administered at home. Nevertheless, professional guidance on what and how much to administer is crucial for optimum results.

Getting Treatment Help

In my neighborhood in central Arizona are several naturopathic doctors who specialize in cancer support. Notice that I say cancer support and not cancer treatment. They have to be careful not to run afoul of FDA regulations, and cancer treatment is a highly controlled subject at the FDA. Nevertheless, cancer support can include cesium therapy, or advice on how to use it yourself.

Note that only 14 or so states in the U.S. actually license naturopathic doctors. Your challenge in the 36 non-licensing states is simply to find a naturopath who has graduated from a reputable naturopathic college. You will have to use the phone book or internet to find one in your neighborhood. Then simply ask whether they can help you with cesium high pH cancer therapy. Very few will have experience with this therapy, although you might get lucky in finding one.

The most effective strategy, however, may be to get treatment at a Mexican cancer clinic. Years ago I used a book on Tijuana cancer clinics in my Integrative Medicine classes as source material for lectures on this topic. Most of the truly effective cancer treatments that were once available in the U.S. have been driven out of the country. Many excellent protocols, including cesium therapy, are now used in cancer clinics south of the border. By the way, if you do some math you will discover that this is a very cost-effective strategy for curing cancer. On the other hand, you will not cure your cancer in the U.S., regardless of whether it is covered by health insurance.

Step 1: Get Good Information

It may seem like an overwhelming task to find what you need to know for curing cancer. Rest assured that others have pioneered that path for you. Don’t know where to find health insurance that might cover part or all of your treatment, even in Mexico?
